Little Man Party - 1 Year Old

We don't know how it happened. We fought it long and hard. But no matter what we did, this little man just kept getting older and older and older. Last week on May 15th, our little man turned 1. Yup, he is officially a number now. Crazy, right?

But let's recap first. The rest of April and May was just a blur of summer-like weather, outings with Mom at YVCC (while Dad knocked it out of the park in his classes) and cheesy grins after cheesy grins. Some highlights included: his new face. Figuring out how to push the kitchen chairs all over the place (and fall over occasionally). Learning the "sauh" sound (as in "saucey"). He's also gotten very tan and tried out the swings at the park. We've had two major blow outs that resulted in mid-day baths, a funny new habit of getting reeeeally close to our faces and just staring at us for no good reason, new and funnier laughs each day. He can also blow kisses now - not with his hand, he just makes a smack noise in your general direction. We'll take it. Oh and the speedy Gonzalez crawl. He does this whenever he hears us chasing him and sometimes will run right into a wall trying to escape.

And now onto the party. I am a very big proponent of the family party one year and friend party the next so I decided to start easy peasy with a family party. We invited the whole Gailan/Zirkle/Cooper/Chumley crowd but due to illness only the Gailan Grandparents and Matt and Kristen could make it. Which meant I way over baked:) Dana was delighted until I took the extras to our friends (we are trying to cut out some sugar...and failing obviously).

The theme was "Little Man" which meant fake mustaches, edible mustaches on the cupcakes, bowties hanging from the walls, and a little birthday sign made from ties. It turned out to be such a fun theme I may just recreate it when he's six or seven (which will never happen because he's going to obey me now and stop growing so darn fast right baby?).

I love that Dana's family humors me and was willing to put on ridiculous sticky on moustaches and pose for pictures. Everyone was a little hesitant at first but after a second it became quite the cool thing to do. Grandma Sue was only too happy to be the one clean shaved face so the rest of us could rock our 'stashes. Clark was none too happy about the handlebar option but (as you can plainly see) he was wild about the straight one. He kept trying to inch it down his face so he could lick it:) I seriously think we took 20 pictures of him doing this because it was so freaking hilarious.

Yup, our kid is awesome. Dana thinks he looks like Mario. I think he's right.

Next on the agenda....the cake. This turned out to be reminiscent of the Santa experience - i.e. I'd built up this image of how it would go down in my mind. He would gingerly lick his fingers, get this big wide eyed holy cow that sugar is delicious look on his face and start scarfing. Yeah that didn't happen:) We stripped him down, did the birthday song and Dana stuck his hand in the icing hoping to kick start the eating. Instead, Clark just scrunched that hand a few times, got this "eww my hand is sticky" look on his face and then picked up the cupcake and - you guessed it- chucked it on the ground. I picked it back up, broke off a piece and fed it to him. He chewed it happily, then grabbed the cupcake again and tossed it over the edge. So we gave up and just laughed at him making a mess with the icing. Maybe next year, right?
Finally, we pulled out the presents. Matt and Kristen got him the cutest little outfit that may never fit him but for now looks hilarious with saggy corduroy pants. We finally hit it on the head with our present. To save my chairs and my baby from many head bonks, enter the baby walker. If you can't tell, that is sheer joy people. He is in love with this thing. It does tile. It does carpets. It makes annoying animal noises and has a detachable purple telephone. Oh yeah. It's the bomb.

We finally got him to bed around 9:30 and he crashed until almost 8 the next morning (happy birthday to the parents!). We had lunch the next day with Brooks and Shannon, Kristen's parents, who had to miss the party and really wanted to see Clark. He was only to happy to bounce on Shannon's lap at RedRobin. We also squeezed in a rowdy Stake Conference and a fabulous summer party at the McCrackens where Clark tried (and failed) to attack Tim Farmer. Tim was saved by sitting in the grass which Clark will not touch no matter what. Smart Tim.

Happy Birthday Little Man. You are the happiest part of our lives and we love watching you grown. Can't wait for what the next year brings.

Happy Birthday baby Clark! We miss you. Sorry we couldn't make it to the party. We were caught up with prep for Mormon Prom.
