16th Annual Gailan...uh...color off

Like most things, 2020, the Carve Off got a remake this year. No friends. No carving. Almost no pumpkins. But, hey, it's 2020 so whatever. We made a really good attempt at doing a family carving event - picked out a pumpkin and everything. But when it came down to it, what with travel and me being lazy...well, it never happened. So we have whole pumpkins as our entry plus 2 very beautiful pumpkin coloring submissions from the kids. Happy Carving all!

1st Day of 1st Grade (Again...)

We made it! Back to school after 7 looooong month! We were so exhausted after our trip but still managed to snap some cute photos of the Clark on day 1 of hybrid 1st grade. And Charlotte in boots.

It was a wild drop off day with temperature checks, lanyard, pull off health forms and standing on little hoof prints etched on the blacktop. Then a crazy pickup in a serpentine line. It was nuts. But it was great. He now has 3 hours MTTHF and virtual Math on Wednesday. Not a perfect system but a step in the right direction. Take that 2020!

Kanab Utah Fieldtrip

Let's keep the summer going people! Waaaaay back in summer Covid crazy days Sarah called me up to see if we wanted to join her in Utah for some hiking. Stir crazy as I was, I agreed thinking 16 hours in a car with my kids was worth it as long as we got out of Washington. Turns out - it totally was!

Monday we drove and drove and drove and drove each other crazy. The Woodburys were nice enough to put us up for the night. Charlotte slept exactly -2 hours so Tuesday started out a little rough. That afternoon we piled into our car with Sarah and Isla as spares for the 5 hours to Kanab (stopping for some delicious ice cream at the Creamery in Beaver on the way).

Clark spent the week sleeping in the office next to Isla, which really proves how grown up he is getting. Dana flew in Wednesday waaaay late and because Taylor is the best person ever and could see how tired I was, he offered to drive to St. George to pick him up. Angel man!

Wednesday we did a crazy sand hike down into a slot canyon. It was beautiful - really the theme of the week. Clark and Char were both super brave in the climbing department. Unfortunately, Char is a lazy hiker and ended up getting carried most of the way by me or Sarah or Isaac or Ethan. Gotta love this cutie.
Thursday we took it up a notch in terms of beauty and trying to kill me. The big group did a full 8.6 miles through the most spectacular slot canyon. Charlotte and I only did about 6 miles but 2 of those were with her on my back so....yeah. Too many photos. Too much beauty. Too many things to climb!
Most nights we fed the kids and headed out for some fun adult time, eating at delicious restaurants, purusing sand blasted stores. Our kids, meanwhile, played pass the electronic with Isla and watched Angry Birds and Anime. Our kids are super easy to please:)

Friday was Coral Pink Sand Dunes. It may have gotten sand in every crevice of my car (and child) for the rest of eternity, but man was it fun to play in. Clark and Dana ventured out with the big kids for some sand sledding. Char and I stayed back with Sarah to enjoy sand snowmans, popcorn, and Isaac's kite. Miss Char was seriously so funny. I took my eyes off her for one second and wham - she was up the hill like a lizard. This kid loves climbing!
This was our kids 4 minutes after we left the dunes:) Most of the week naps happened in the car on our way to another beautiful location.
Like this one...Seriously, it's just a river in the middle of the canyon with these impossibly yellow trees and rocks a plenty for my children's enjoyment.
Saturday was our last day. We hit up something called Goblin canyon which had squatty rocks and aerial views. Clark may have gotten up a little high for my liking and Char sure tried. It was another fun day of warm sunshine and exhausting hikes.
And finally...a stop at the Moqui caves. I opted not to take the slick stairs of death but Dana hefted tiny butt up there to join the Woodburys at these seriously cool caves.

Sunday we packed up, drove to SLC to drop Dana at the airport and continued on to a very sketchy Airbnb in Twin Falls. It was really fine, minus the dog that lived upstairs:( After a bad nights sleep, we got up super duper early, enjoyed our 9 degree car and frozen windshield and headed back to Moxee with too much TV and too many times seeing Inside/Out. So glad to be home but SOOOO glad we got to spend the week with our amazing family in the most amazing place.
